I’ll be hopping off abroad for a quick trip in a day or two. Soon after my return I should be able to put out a blog on a topic of immediate relevance and personal significance for many MAPs in a way that some of my recent work has not been. A notable example of that was the most recent one, on Robert Trivers, an evolutionary psychologist whose heyday was half a century ago.
Not exactly hot news, then, and his highly abstract theory of sexual psychology isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But that does not detract from its importance to MAPs, in my view, and I make no apologies for focusing on that theme.
However, there needs to be balance. As well as long, weighty, often extensively researched pieces, there should be shorter, snappier ones that go straight to the heart of the daily lives of MAPs and youth. Actually, just between you and me, I should confess that Heretic TOC must in any event get back to such basics for a while for purely practical reasons.
When I started this blog in 2012, long before the Ukraine war or Covid or Brexit or the energy price shock, Donald Trump was just a brash New York business boss with a TV show; and, in the UK, we were basking in the warm glow of a great London Olympics. Happy days!
Happy days for Heretic TOC, too, in a sense. Although there were lots of grim developments to write about, especially the relentless rise of victim culture from the Jimmy Savile moral panic onwards, the business of writing a blog was relatively simple. Or it was the way I did it. I’d just knock out a few thoughts that came to me in the moment, and put them out there and then, without spending a lot of time on background research. That’s how I managed to do 15 blogs in the first three weeks.
I need to get back to that spontaneity, if only because I am under increasing time pressure these days, and at my age good luck with trying to work faster. The trouble is that in order to maintain even my present modest lifestyle (“luxury” items include attending events such as conferences and workshops, buying books, subs to journals, etc., needed to keep well informed and think things through) I need to spend more time doing work I can get paid for, as a freelance editorial consultant. If there are one or two MAP-friendly millionaires reading this (or billionaires, who knows?), please note: bung me a few grand from time to time to keep me doing a proper, full-fat HTOC, instead of freelancing, and I’m your man.
Until that happens, I’ll just have to bash stuff out as and when I can, after earning my crust for the day – work that I enjoy, by the way, and it is reassuring to know my writing is still valued by non-MAP clients. Note that I have been publicly mulling over retirement from HTOC for the best part of four years now, so it’s not as though this will come as shock news to attentive heretics.
Check it out. In November 2022, I did a blog called “After ten years, time to take the chair”, meaning I should retire to become a sort non-executive chairman of the board, a mere figurehead rather than a hard-working CEO.
Noting the First World War song “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away”, I mused on retirement, saying “I feel in remarkably good nick for my age, both physically and mentally. So, who knows, I might go on fading so slowly you’d hardly notice for another decade, or even two.”
Happily, the “good nick” side of things is still true but time pressure is becoming, well, relentlessly more pressing, so something has to go – unless y’all heretics suddenly become inspired to submit more guest blogs: they are always welcome.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE
I know, I know. I said only a moment ago I’d shut up but here I am again, breaking my promise, shameless as a politician. It’s just that with Huw Edwards back in the news with his new Substack, I thought I might just mention the Channel 5 drama about him earlier this year, Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards.
Did any heretics here see it? Considered purely as drama, I found it compelling, both for Martin Clunes’ convincing portrayal of Edwards and for its depiction of his teenage so-called victim. Viewers are heavily steered to see the latter as a victim of Edwards’ abuse of power (the clue is in the title), but from the facts as presented, the young man seemed to have plenty of agency: he did topless videos for money (plenty of it, apparently). His choice; no one forced him. Nice work if you can get it, I’d say.
Andrew Billen’s review in The Times (25 March) was revealing. He wrote:
After the screening I told Clunes that I admired his performance and that he had caught many aspects of the Edwards I had met. But I also observed that the film did not show Edwards the amusing raconteur who lunched for Wales. Clunes looked astonished. He had talked to many people who had worked with Edwards, and none had mentioned that side of him at all.
Well, they wouldn’t, would they? There’s an all-too-common tendency to kick people when they’re down. It’s a herd mentality thing, a temptation to say you knew someone was a wrong ’un all along, because that’s what you think is the safest thing to say, even though the truth might be that got on very well with them.

Have people here seen that Andrew Tate, alongside his brother Tristan Tate, have both been hit with new charges. While the pair currently reside in the U.S., these new charges come from the UK, which is pushing for their extradition. Most notably, Andrew specifically, has been hit with 19 new charges relating to “indecent images of a child and extreme pornography” by Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service.
The pair are quite sensibly resisting their extradition to the UK, where I am confident they will lose and end up with harsh sentences for what may in-fact be not a lot, given how vague and expansive British law is… I can well-imagine that at least one of the Tate’s, like most men in the UK, will have choked a woman during sex – a fairly common recreational “kinky” practice which most people wouldn’t know is illegal under UK law. The specific claim of the Tate’s having choked women until they passed out changes things, although I don’t see how that could easily be proven…
I can also well-imagine that Andrew would have tons of pornography on his devices, and as a man who’s spent years managing camgirls / OnlyFans creators – itself illegal under UK law (“Andrew facing one count of controlling prostitution for gain” – he may well have possessed or been sent a sexual image or video of a person under 18 years of age. I’m sure it does, to some of them. Adults who lose to child prodigies often don’t take it at all well! I lost to youngsters a couple of times when I was a club player but I am proud to say I had no trouble taking it in the right spirit. I found it a privilege to be in the presence of such talent (which could be a bit of a distraction when they were “talent” in more than just a chess sense!).
As with maths and music, chess is one of those things at which kids can really shine. Not that beating me was a huge achievement, although I did play for a county briefly (Bedfordshire) and managed to draw a game once against a world champion, no less (Vasily Smyslov), albeit only in a simultaneous display.
As much as I do feel victimized by our society as a MAP – honestly, I do currently care much more about the poor children being victimized with the silent support of our governments in places like Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. It breaks my heart to see the scenes from these places.
We are entering very dark times. Certainly not a good time for MAP-advocacy. When people are dying, there are more important things to care about.

You are right, David. But when are children not dying in horrible conflict zones? You mention the places most in the news, but arguably the situation in Sudan, which you did not mention, is even worse than the others. And those of us with long lives and memories could point to any number of other hellscapes over the years since the end of that biggest hellscape, WWII.
But the difference with 50 years ago is that now wars and genocides are visible on Internet and on media, everyone can watch them on a smartphone. However, the indifference in front of them is shocking, and worse, those who denounce the massacre and ethnic cleansing in Palestine are demonised.

Yes, although there was still never any shortage of horror to confront us through the print media and, far more graphically, through TV. When I was a youngster, we were seeing the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps exposed in televised film shot by the Allied forces for the first time; then we were treated over decades to an endless succession of grotesquery elsewhere: wars, famine (nearly always an avoidable by-product of war) and genocide. Remember Biafra? Cambodia? Rwanda? Bosnia? Ethiopia? Everybody suffers, but the kids disproportionately. Many turn out to be amazingly resilient, but it’s hard to recover from such a severely compromised start in life, whether through losing a limb, or an education, or a family, or the whole damn lot.
A problem for the millions thus afflicted is that it is impossible to focus on everything. Media attention is notoriously fickle: continuing horrors in the West Bank, say, or Lebanon, are trumped by wildfires in France. It’s not even the media’s fault, or indeed that of the world at large. A lot of people care, as expressed through donations to disaster relief funds etc. But of course the politics of ethnic, religious, etc., differences do not help.

Unfortunately, the demonisers often genuinely (if misguidedly) perceive their side’s ruthlessless to be justified in the name of what they see as a wider existential threat, to the future of “western civilisation”, or whatever, even though the biggest threat to civilised standards comes from themselves.
You are right Tom there have been and are even more terrible conflicts with even more children dying. Yemen, Sudan, and others. Obviously, I am affected by what the media focuses on as everyone else – I am not pretending otherwise.
But the argument that “children are dying in all conflicts” is a weak attempt to make people shrug and go on. The government of my country is not involved in Sudan conflict in any way. “We” do support USA, Israel, and Ukraine, and are warmongering against Russia. Yours country, obviously, is mostly responsible for all the mess in the first place, historically, so I understand your feelings might be a bit different then mine.
To make it perfectly clear: every conflict where children are dying is a tragedy, and our governments should do everything they can to stop it. In this specific case, both mine and yours Government are protecting those killing the children.
But to take this back to our MAP topic – all I am saying is that in the time of war, there will hardly be much space for any progressive agenda, let alone MAP-related one.

Generations of preachers have tried to spin these words into something vaguely adequate to the weight of the world’s suffering and what can/should be done about it. But if even Jesus failed, maybe the rest of us have a bit of an excuse!

True. All too sadly true. So we are left with the question of how best to deploy our limited resources of caring and outreach. Jesus had his answer, which has been impressively influential over two millennia, even if the poor are still with us and children are still dying. My approach, like that of many other MAPs, has included a conscious if very limited attempt to make a contribution to society in an ordinary way. We all, or nearly all, quietly do our bit in fields such as mainstream community and political engagement, charitable donations, and (if we haven’t blotted our copybooks by being too “out”) involvement in a socially acceptable way to help kids directly, through teaching, mentoring, etc.
More conspicuously in my case, though, I have taken an interest in trying to generate a MAP sense of community and serious debate. David, you have been generous enough to say you appreciate this, so I need say little more about it, except thank you. Thoughtful heretics such as yourself give me more than I can say: any benefit is not just in one direction. All I will add is that I wonder whether my efforts have achieved all that they can after nearly a decade and a half of HTOC, and whether I should move on. But you know from my current blog that I am struggling with this question.
Personally, Tom, I hope you stay on. As you know, we’ve entered a dark period of setback for the MAP community. There appeared a time during the past 15 years where it looked like we were finally on the verge of finding a voice in society, but the continued moral panics have smashed that, particularly in lieu of its most strongest recent manifestation, the dreaded “Epstein Files.”
Not since the late 1990s do I recall it being so popular to bash, fear, and demonize MAPs. I’m not giving up hope, I’ve often mentioned that setbacks happen, and society is not exactly conducive right now for fundamental change. We have too many Virtue Warriors out there looking for easy targets, and we’re about the easiest target out there, a gift that keeps on giving to those looking for targets. And pedo hunting remains as popular pastime for those seeking easy virtue points as deer hunting to get one’s fill of venison.
This is why we need you still in the game, Tom. No actual new voices have arisen during the current quagmire to give the old guard a break, so the old guard is still needed. You’re among the most weathered but toughest soldiers among us; you’ve been through the battlefield, received more than your share of shrapnel, yet remained strong. Even during the times we haven’t gotten along (and I’m sorry about that) you’ve been one of my heroes.

The other day an unfortunate incident. Someone was talking about shooting all n**ces. everyone including my friend were hi fiving eachother. i reluctantly joined in as i would have been exposed as one. And no worries Matt. You did what you thought you had to in the moment to protect yourself – many people who’ve been in similar situations for all sorts of reasons… IRL I might push back and say to people that “it’s pretty fucked up we’re cheering for someone to be killed, we don’t know someone’s situation that led them to that point, or the actual circumstances of what took place.” I’ve pushed back on people’s bullshit IRL before and it’s always gone fine, but you’ve gotta pick your battles and use your judgement.
You’ve got your own morals and perspective, which is great. Imo, focusing on building up yourself, your skills and mental health / fortitude, sounds like it should be your priority atm. So, try not to worry about the nonsense people say; much of it is performative anyway…
That woman is a murderer. I think that murder is the worst crime that can ever happen, because the victim can not recover from it. Children can go to therapy and recover, but a dead person can not be brought back to life.
